The wheels are starting to turn:

Now we move from scrimmages to training sessions.

First training session is at Barratt Reserve, West Beach. This Sunday at 2pm. Location for Tuesday will be confirmed soon. If you are able to give people a ride or need a ride, ask around either on facebook, by email, or at League tonight.

For all trainings from now on you need: Disc, Light and Dark shirt, Cleats and Runners, and to be there 10-15 minutes early. Punctuality for the scrimmages was not up to scratch, we will be starting at 2pm sharp.

Voting for new name

Hey everyone.

It is time to vote on the new name for our club. This is an important aspect of our upcoming season and every season after that. People need to respect the name and want to play for this team. The board took everyone’s nominations under consideration and from those we have shortlisted 13 club names.

What we want people to do now is to take a look at the names and choose their favourite five. Send these through to both Tim Davis and myself in a list ranking your favourite to 5th favourite. The voting will be worked out preferentially like our government elections are so it is important that you think about and rank your picks carefully.

Votes will close on Sunday the 24th of November. This gives you time to discuss with others before making your choice.
Please send the votes through to these two emails.

New club and new name

Hi everyone.

So with the creation of a new board for elite mens ultimate in South Australia we have also decided that this should be the creation of a new club.

This club, unlike Karma will be a united club where we can grow and develop all players for te future of mens Ultimate in SA.

The first thing to be decided then should be the new name of the club.

I am now opening up for nominations for a name of the club. Please comment on this blog post with your name choice and maybe a little about why you think it is a good choice. I will keep nominations open for another week.

Application: Coach

Please find attached a summary of my application to the board to serve as Coach for 2014.

https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B7If_8uLS-FDdlpGQkd4dXBUWjg/edit?usp=sharing

In terms of Leadership, I don't necessarily expect the Captains to be selected so soon. Captains could be selected as the season goes on by any coach/coaching group/board or combination of the three. Captains may not be necessary until we approach tournaments, especially considering we have 5 board members. I feel that people may not necessarily feel ready to commit to being a Leader so early in the season.

Regards,
BJ

On field leadership

Please post any applications for on-field leadership you may have on this blog.

People should feel free to comment and question the applications like they did for the Board member applications.

New Board?

Hello Everyone

So looking at the nominations so far I am excited about the direction we are going.

We have five nominees for the five positions.

Jonathon Warren-White – President

David Sanderson – Treasurer

Talis Smits – Secretary

Valentin Zarkhin – General board member

Tim Davis – General Board member

If there are no objections I am happy to call this as the inaugural Karma Board. I will leave this post up for anyone with objections for 48 hours and if no concerns are raised the five people named will organise an initial meeting with the purpose of selecting the on-field leadership for the upcoming season.

Nomination for Treasurer

hi i guess im supposed to write my manifesto here or something.

anyhow these are some things i would like to see & would work towards for the new mens team:

- getting "buyin" from a wider player base
- more people involved in running things, inputting into things.
people feeling like they belong to the group, identify with the group, feeling valued & their ideas are valued
- people feeling enthusiastic about coming to training, enjoying training, building excitement within the group to get better together or even to just play together

- player development / pathways
- more emphasis on developing new players
- more emphasis on individual player development rather than just running a bunch of drills. so more 1 on 1 coaching/mentoring. or at least providing some direction for people to pursue their own development.
- more structure, systems in place to support player development in current & future.

overall i feel like there is a lot of potential in sa. they just need to be encouraged & developed & find the passion. where's the passion?!!

ill nominate for treasurer since noone else has yet.

Nomination for general board member

Despite being voted best rookie for Karma last season, I have actually been around ultimate in SA for quite a few years (god im old). I have always believed that SA can pretty much never be as good as the eastern states at any sport simply because we don't have the talent pool. However when I first started playing was around the time when Karma managed to convincingly take 5th place at nationals, something which currently seems impossible to achieve. So what has changed? Well sure we've lost a few world's players, but I think what has really changed in the years since then is our attitude towards elite level ultimate. Although this past season was my first Karma tournament, I have been training with the team almost every year, and I have definitely noticed the lacklustre devotion and motivation to this club. Before I continue with this epic rant I would like to flick back to my aforementioned "god im old" statement. Being old(er) has also made me realise that frisbee is not the only thing in life. Although there is a time when most guys would be happy playing frisbee 7 days a week, eventually that ambition slows down and you gain other priorities in life, whether that be uni, work, travelling, getting married or whatever. The reason that I bring this up is because I see a lot of that in SA ultimate, I mean if you gave me a choice between going on holiday or going to frisbee nationals I'd take the holiday, but despite that I think that when you make a commitment to a team, you need to honour that commitment. And the only way we can bring that about is by changing the culture of this club to one where people want to improve, where they want to be better, where they want to train twice a week, and where they want to commit to the team and most importantly, their team mates. I want to say that I was disappointed with Karma's placings at nationals last season, but that would be an unfair analysis. The truth is that when you have 5 guys rock up to training a week before the comp, you can't expect to do that well. So based on that effort, we probably got exactly the placing we deserve. So how do we change this?

Well I have devised a 5 point plan which I have believe will put us on the right track. See the link below.

During nationals, we were losing to teams that were comprised of people who didn't make it into the good NSW teams, or people who didn't want to train anymore. I believe that we definitely have the capacity to make it into the top 8, but we need to become a club that unites SA, because it would appear to me that currently we have UE running off doing their own thing, AU sitting on their high horse and mocking Karma, and hence the SA team becomes FU with some tag alongs. People follow others for two reasons, fear and respect. What we need is a leadership team that does both of those. Especially the fear.

Anyway point is that I would like to be part of this team that can help bring SA ultimate back into the reputable elite level. There will always be world class players in every team, but what seperates chump teams (currently us) from successful ones is their commitment to each other.

I would like to point out I have been working on my stories.

Also I am nominating for a general board member position.

Val

Nomination for General Board Member

Hey guys,

I (Tim) am nominating for a General Board member position.

This is not gonna be extensive as the others as it's late and i'm tired.

I'm nominating because I want to see the club move forward!!
I've only been around the past couple of years, but recently there hasn't been any progression with the overall skills/work ethic/commitment of the team and it has hence showed in our nationals performances.

I-Beam & Fshywick (however it's spelt) have the same issues as us compared to the larger states in terms of player base, yet every year they are in the top 4-8 teams, while we sit outside the 10...

Yes, we've lost a few key players recently, but there's no reason that we cant push it to these teams should we put in the hard work. We showed against some of the good teams (eg. Sublime) that we have what it takes to match them, our issue is sustaining our best.
This can be achieved through commitment to the team which involves a solid lead-up, attendance at trainings, and willingness to do better. Last year we had <5 people at some trainings which is just appaling to those not showing, and disrespectful to teammates.

My main goal for the future of karma is to increase commitment to the team, and for people to once again see it as THE top level team in SA to strive for and to put in the hard work to compete strongly at nationals; not just to save our spot, not just to beat rivals, not to crack the top 10..... but to compete at a high level with the top teams out of every other state (I'm not setting a top 4 etc.... as this is an uncontrollable by us and is related to all other teams).

Goodnight,
-Tim

Nomination for Secretary

I am nominating myself for the Secretary position on the board.

Having played for Karma for the past two Open seasons and only having started playing a year before that I still feel like I am a new player - and I feel like I can bring a fresh outlook on the sport and how an elite team should work.
I am nominating for Secretary as I feel that this will allow me to take on a more active role on the board and contribute well into the future with experience I gain from this position.

As an enthusiastic member of the board I will work hard to help establish our team at the elite level of the Nationals circuit.

Our Goal should be to win a National title by:

          - Changing the culture of our team
                      - Reduce the inter-club rivalry
                      - Build and foster the community of the team through on and off field activities

          - Being committed players to our team and campaign
                      - A small club fee that will be put towards tournament fees or better accommodation
                      - Attendance record to reward those who consistently attend trainings and events

          - Working hard and training with intensity all year round
                      - 'Hard work beats talent when talent doesn't work hard'
                      - Not just to be fit for the season but to be stronger and healthier all year round
                      - Establishing and playing within our systems as best we can whether we win or lose

          - Supporting each other both on and off the field
                      - Playing for the 6 other guys on the line, the 12 on the side,
and the 24 who had to stay at home

          - Developing players at all levels
                      - Re-establish Super League as a tool to develop our team and players
                      - Give our young players a team to aspire to play on
                      - Give our experienced players a team where they can continue to build and grow

I honestly believe that we have the ability as a team to push the top teams to their limits and win nationals and I will continue to strive to push the club in this direction to become an elite men's team whos name and players are know throughout the country.

If you have any questions I am happy to answer them, or elaborate on any of these points via Facebook.

Thanks, Tee

Nomination for President

I am nominating myself for President.

Having been the driving force behind Karma over the last two years I feel that I still have a lot to give the club but feel that I can do that better from a position off field rather than on field.

As president I would take an active role in creating and changing the culture of the club both on and off field. This would come in three different ways.

  1.       Choosing (along with the other board members) the right person to move us forward on field in a captaining/coaching capacity.
  2.        Helping to run and organise events throughout the year that continue to foster club culture. These events can be both Frisbee related (tournaments, skills sessions and training camps) and non-frisbee related (Get-togethers and  other social events).
  3.        Work on creating an inspiration-culture (not sure what to call it) in the local league players. Creating a want to join the Elite level and pushing themselves to reach that level.

I would continue to play for the club but would be stepping away from the on-field leadership, instead leaving that to the boards chosen coach. My role in terms of national commitment would be administration.

I truly feel that this club can become a successful nationals club and look at teams like I-Beam, Firestorm, Sublime and Fyshwick and see the potential in our playing group to reach those teams on a continual basis.

Nominations for the Karma Board

Hi guys.

Pretty excited about all this.

Our positions are.

President
Treasurer
Secretary
General Board Member
General Board Member

The process now will be for each person who wants to nominate for a position to write up a proposal for why you should be elected to the new board.

I am the administrator of the blog and the only person able to post new things on this blog. I can add authors however so anyone who wants to post a nomination just leave a comment for this post. (Anyone can comment)

I think the easiest way to do this would be for each nomination to be a separate post and then people can ask questions directly to each candidate.

All right guys, have at it. Let me know if you want to nominate so I can make you an author!
